Week of May 12-16th

Standard

Wow!  Can you believe Kindergarten is almost over??  I told you at parent night that it would fly by and it sure has!  It’s been such a fun year and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know and love your kids!

Thanks for coming to the Mother’s Day Tea.  We practice and practice and there I days that I think, “Oh dear…”, but they always pull it off in the end.  I hope you enjoyed our journey through kindergarten.  The kids did a fabulous job and I was SO proud of them!

FIELD TRIP is Monday!  Please remember to send a disposable sack lunch that doesn’t need refrigeration, a disposable water bottle for lunch, and put their name on everything.  We will be outside the entire morning, so sunscreen may be appropriate.  Please put on before they leave the house.  Please make sure they’re dressed for the weather and that they are wearing tennis shoes.  We’ll be in the dirt, so not a dress up day!

Our last day of school will be on Wed. even though 1-5 goes for half of a day on Thursday.  We will do our party on a box on Wed.  Please don’t bring the boxes until Wed, and make sure the recipient’s name is on the front.  Please also make sure it’s just a single serving of each item.  If you cannot participate, just let me know and I’ll make sure everyone is covered.

Next week, I will start sending all their stuff home.  I will be sending home a summer packet that will be great review.  There is a summer reading postcard program that you will find in there as well.  The summer abc writing journal can be turned in to me next August for 20 gotchas to start off 1st grade!!  It does have to be complete though 🙂

You will also be receiving a class book of all their book pages from this year.  It’s so fun to look through and see how their writing has changed and vastly improved!!  A special Kindergarten handprint memory book will also come home.  I hope it’s something you cherish for years to come!

If you haven’t fill out the end of the year evaluation that I sent earlier this week, please do so if you can.  Remember it’s two sided.  I won’t read any of them until school is out and names are optional.  I’m always looking for ways to improve, so let me know your thoughts.

While I’m looking forward to summer and finally getting my kitchen finished, I do hate to let the kids go.  I FINALLY got them trained! 🙂  I know they’ll do a great job in first grade and I hope they’ll come back to visit for years to come!  Keep checking email from me this summer.  We’ll have a few days to meet at school and read and play on the playground.  The last two summers, we’ve met for a summer movie.  As long as something good comes out, we’ll plan that too.

As I wrap up the last blog post of the year, I want to thank you for all your support this year.  I truly couldn’t do what I do without all the parent support I have.  Keep the kids reading over the summer, enjoy some time together, and I may see you at the pool!  Thanks for letting me be a part of this special time in their lives!  Have a great summer!

Week of April 28-May 2nd

Standard

May already!  Wow, this year has flown by!

This week we were…oh, I can’t tell you all what we did.  Here’s what we did that you CAN know about:

We started our ocean animal reports.  You’d think they’d be so much easier the second time around, wouldn’t you?  Well, I work with 5 and 6 year olds, so not so much…  They are becoming their animal experts though and will write the report and share the poster like last time.  Internet pictures need to be here on Monday please.

In math, we are still working on shapes and position words.  We took our EOY math assessment and the kids did really well.  Counting by 2’s and 2 fewer were the things missed the most.  We also did our end of the year writing assessment.  I pulled out the boy assessment and showed the kids and they were so impressed with how they improved..which they should be!!

We have a ton of stuff still to do this year and behavior gets a little wacky.  Please keep having those discussions at home about continuing above the line behavior!

Next week is the following:

CAKE PARADE

On Monday, May 5, the Fifth Grade Classes are holding a cake parade to raise money for “Reach Out and Read,”  a local literacy program that provides books to children in need.

***Please bring in 10-15 coins to vote for your favorite cakes and give to this worthy cause.

We will go visit the cake parade in the afternoon.  The kids read a book and then bake and decorate a cake based on their book!  It’s so fun to see.  Please send in coins so your child can vote!

Thursday is the field trip.  We will be outdoors the entire time, so please wear tennis shoes and send a jacket or a hoodie.  They need to bring a disposable water bottle and lunch and everything needs their name on it.  We will NOT be refrigerating lunches, so keep that in mind.  We will leave around 8:45 and return around 12:15-12:30.  Thanks to the Moms that volunteered to go with us.  Please remember Moms to send your money in to me.

Friday is field day and we will be outside ALL day!  Please be sure they dress appropriately and bring a water bottle with their name on it!  If they want to wear a hat or sunglasses, that’s fine, but THEY will be responsible for them.  Please put sunscreen on them before school and if you want them to reapply, send it in a bag with their name on it.  We will be in teams with our Bluejay families this year.

Have you been watching the eagles?  Last week, we saw a little more than I cared to when they had a rabbit in the nest for lunch.  Then they brought up a fish that was alive…one of the kids said, “It’s alive!…welll, not any more! ”  We talked about how that is their lunch and that’s how animals in the wild live.  They’ve really had fun watching them and learning from them.  Today someone asked if they’ll fly before school is over.  I doubt it given their size, but I don’t know for sure.  I told them that if not, they can certainly watch at home!  Just google decorah eagles and click the ustream link.

Next week, we’ll finish up ocean animals, do a few more secret things, and end the week with our field trip and field day.  They should be good and exhausted by Friday!

Have a great weekend!
