Week of Jan. 24th-28th

Standard

This week we started learning about penguins and learned all kinds of new vocabulary. We are creating a non-fiction book about penguins that will come home with conference folders. Our favorite new word is regurgitate! 🙂 Well, that’s how penguins take care of their chicks! We learned about huddling and practiced in class to learn to keep each other warm. We tried to keep penguin eggs on our feet and waddle, which is REALLY hard without a brood pouch, and today we did an experiment to learn how blubber has helped penguins adapt to the freezing cold water in Antarctica. Be sure to ask your child about the blubber glove.

We are working on beginning and ending sounds in words and decoding words. Book baggies continue to go home. Please remember to mark them so I know they’re read.

In math, we’ve done problem solving, addition and added some simple subtraction in. We will continue to work on addition and do more subtracting. When we subtract, we say we “take them away” and we show an X with our arms to X them out as we take them away. Olathe is having a Sumdog math contest starting today through the weekend, so we did a little playing of Sumdog this afternoon on our Ipads. If they play, they are automatically entered into the contest. Several kids couldn’t play because their I-pads were not charged. Please make sure they’re charged daily.

If you signed up to send items in on the sign up genius, please make sure those are here on Monday. Several things are needed for Tuesday. Thank you for helping add some fun to K!

Next Thursday, will be our 100th day of school! The 100 posters look great in the hall. Please send yours in if you haven’t. The kids should come dressed as if they’re 100. Please don’t feel you have to buy anything. I sent a letter with some ideas and I know there’s tons of ideas online. I told them they could bring a cane for a picture, and then we’ll store them for the day. It will be a super fun day all around the number 100!!

Week of Jan. 17-21st

Well what a crazy short week. We are doing all we can to keep everyone from getting sick. Thank you for doing your part as well. I know I’m a broken record, but please make sure they have masks that fit and stay up over their nose.

This week, we added the letters, sounds, and actions for Qq and Xx and the word “must”. We learned about animals in winter and learned about migration, hibernation, and adaptation. We also worked on some snow poems in our winter poetry book.

In math, we are still working on number bonds and simple addition. Today we played magic number. I give them a number (today was 3 and 5) and they come up with as many ways as they can to make that number. They thought that was great because I called it “magic” number! 🙂 We’ll keep working on addition next week and then start with subtraction.

Our 100th day will now be on Thurs. Feb. 3rd. I sent a note home yesterday about how to dress like you are 100 years old. I’d like all kids to participate in some way as it’s more fun that way and the kids all have fun with it. I was at Party City a few weeks ago and they had a section for this. However, read the note I sent home, you don’t need to go buy anything. We will do all things based on the number 100 that day! Please send in your 100 board as soon as it’s done, but they all need to be in by the 28th.

Ipads-please make sure they’re charged daily. Also, if there is an update, you need to do that at home with the ipad plugged in. Several kids have updates ready to go I noticed today.

Next week will be all things penguins! We’re going to make an informational book using vocabulary all about penguins. We will also be doing several science experiments as well!

Major Saver cards are coming home today. The first turn in date will be next WED. A portion of money from the card purchases goes directly to our school. If you’d like to buy one, please read the envelope for directions and send it back in. There are different prizes for different amounts sold. There is an online option as well if you have people out of state. They will get a card for their area. The collection dates are on the envelope.

Today we learned to how to code on code.org. I told the kids I’d give you the directions. go to code.org, click the students (purple bee), click grade K-5, Course B and then they can start. If they want to create a log in, then they can start where they left off each time. If you do that, then write it on the tech sheet in the back of their folder or I won’t know how to help next time we get on.

On Monday, I will send a note home about Valentine boxes so you have plenty of time. Just a reminder from a previous email, I will be taking a personal day on the 14th, so they will have a sub and do some valentine activities, but we will have our “party” time and pass out valentines with boxes on the 15th! Please don’t send boxes or valentines in until the 15th. There is a class list on the back of the note for the valentines.

Hope you have a great weekend! Go Chiefs!
