Week of Dec. 5th-9th

Standard

It’s been gingerbread week in class! We are starting to read and compare all different versions of gingerbread stories! They’re so much fun! We’re also learning about characters, refrains and endings. They made a gingerbread cookie jar journal that they are writing all the endings to the stories. Lots of stretching words out in our class!

In math, we’ve mostly been doing problem solving with addition and a few subtraction problems thrown in as an introduction. We also worked on some logic problems and had to solve the gingerbread mystery by solving the clues about the gingerbread men.

We are revisiting behavior this week as the beginning of the week was rough. I know this time of year is hard. Even if they don’t get that a break is coming, we feel a little cooped up with indoor recess. Yesterday Buddy the elf left kindness seeds and we worked really hard on being kind to others. Today when we came in, the kindness seeds had grown into candy canes!! We were going to do an experiment with them but ran out of time, so we’ll do it on Monday instead. Buddy said he’d watch over our candy canes over the weekend!

Next week we will finish up our gingerbread stories, do some fun holiday activities and work on our Fastbridge testing.

Please return all book/game bags next week by Wed. I will be keeping them over break.

On Monday, I will send home winter break packets and Jan. Reado’s. Winter break packets can be returned completed by the Friday when we return in Jan. for stickers.

If you signed up to donate items for the holiday party, thank you! Please have those to me by Tues. of next week so I can make sure we have everything. And I was right and the sign up genius is messed up since I did it! 🙂 The only thing we could use more of are sprinkles that are a little bigger, like stars or bigger balls than the tiny ones. We also need another box of the 5 oz Dixie cups.

We are having a spirit week next week and an assembly on Thursday. Mon: crazy hair or hat day, Tues: light bright (neon colors), Wed. Winter Wonderland Thurs. Holiday or festive wear and Friday Pajama day. Reminder that Friday is a half day and we dismiss at NOON! We will NOT have lunch that day so please send in a snack.

We welcomed a new student today and will be losing a student after next week. Kenny Myles joined our class today and Kip Williams will be moving after next week. We are happy to meet a new friend and will be sad to see one go!

Please let me know if you will NOT be here next Thursday or Friday so that I can get their stuff sent home. I have a small gift for all of them and I want to make sure they get it before break. We will also be cleaning out supplies next week and getting into our new crayons and supplies as needed.

Have a good weekend!

What an exciting day today in kindergarten! Each class had a classroom elf show up! We use the elf as a writing prompt daily as that’s a pretty enticing thing to write about! Each day our elf will be doing something different and the kids will be writing in their journals about what Buddy is doing. We are not allowed to touch him as his magic will go away. He brought everyone a new journal and then we made our own elf headbands. Pictures are on Seesaw!

The month of Dec. will be focused on comparing and contrasting gingerbread stories. There are SO many versions and that allows us to compare/contrast and use all our literacy skills around gingerbread!

We are almost finished with our measurement unit. We will be practicing all our math skills learned so far and simple addition problems for the rest of the month. We will be working on problem solving in math as well.

Our last book order is due tomorrow. I will place the order when I get back in town on Sunday. If you want me to hold books for gifts, just email me and let me know!

Next week, we are getting a new student, a boy named Kenny. The kids are very excited to welcome a new student!

Our school is collecting coins for the Mayor’s Shoe fund. Any change collected will go to buy shoes for kids in Olathe who need some extra help. If you want to participate, please send in your spare change next week. (And be sure to tell the kids to give it to me!)

Just a reminder that if you’re coming to eat, let me know so I can make sure your child is in the front of the line. I do attendance by 8:30 so if you can let me know before then, then I won’t order them a lunch.

I sent a reado home today for Dec. Please return that after the winter break by Jan. 6th. I will also send the Jan. one on the last day we’re here in Dec.

If you will NOT be here that last 1/2 day, please let me know. I have several things to send home with the kids and want to be sure they get it all.

fyi: I will be gone tomorrow. Headed to Vegas for the Pac-12 championship game. (I think I’ve mentioned our daughter works for Utah football). Please contact the office with any changes as I won’t have access to email.

Have a great weekend!
